US Open: Imperious Gauff Ends Ostapenko Challenge To Reach Last Four

September 05, (THEWILL) – American teenager, Coco Gauff, booked her place in the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time with a dominant straight sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old sixth seed dismantled Latvia’s Ostapenko in a blistering display, storming to a 6-0, 6-2 win in just over an hour on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gauff now awaits either 10th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic or Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the last four on Thursday.

Ostapenko, who stunned world number one, Iga Swiatek, in the fourth round, had no answer to Gauff’s power and precision. The American raced through the first set in just 20 minutes, conceding only two unforced errors.

Although Ostapenko threatened a comeback after breaking early in the second set, Gauff broke straight back before pulling away. The teenager sealed the win on her third match point with a thumping forehand winner.

Gauff admitted she felt the pressure despite the scoreline, but was delighted to reach the semi-final. She becomes the first American teenager to reach the US Open semi-finals since 2001. The composed youngster will enter the last four brimming with confidence after producing a masterful performance.
