US, Mexico Withdraw Joint 2027 Women’s World Cup Bid

April 30, (THEWILL)- The United States and Mexico have withdrawn their joint bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup. This surprise move comes just weeks before FIFA is scheduled to vote on the hosting rights at its Congress in Bangkok on May 17.

Originally favourites to land the 2027 tournament, the US and Mexican Football Associations stated they will now focus efforts on a bid for the 2031 edition instead. Their withdrawal leaves only two remaining candidates – a joint bid from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and a solo bid from Brazil.

Hosting a women’s World Cup is a “huge undertaking”, according to US Soccer President, Cindy Parlow Cone. Delaying until 2031 allows more preparation time after staging the 2026 men’s World Cup alongside Canada. Mexico Federation chief Ivar Sisniega cited promoting growth for “the most successful Women’s World Cup ever” as the motive.

The 2027 host vote using an open ballot system was only confirmed by FIFA earlier on Monday. Landing those hosting rights would have added to a packed North American sporting calendar also featuring the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and 2024 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.

With four titles, the US are the most successful women’s World Cup team. The 2023 tournament was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, while Canada staged the 2015 edition – the last time it was held in North America.
