UPDATE: Pele Undergoes Successful Surgery To Remove Lesion From Colon

September 06, (THEWILL) – Brazilian football icon Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known affectionately as “Pele”, has successfully undergone surgery on a tumour in his colon and has reportedly been recuperating in hospital.

Pele shared the information of his hospitalization via a social media post on Monday after he had been in hospital for six days as THEWILL reported earlier.

The post from the 80-year-old read: “My friends, thank you very much for the kind messages. Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon. The tumor was identified during the tests I mentioned last week. Fortunately, I’m used to celebrating great victories alongside you.”

Earlier, when rumours were spreading about the actual condition of the football icon, Joe Fraga, Pele’s business manager, sought to calm the fears of fans by assuring that Pele was not in any immediate danger as the condition was not grave.

It was reported that the tumour was detected when the football great underwent routine examinations in Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, in Brazil. Although initial coverage assumed that he needed medical assistance after losing consciousness and fainting, Pele had initially denied that account of the story.

Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest players of all time, Pele remains the only footballer, living or dead, to have won three World Cups in the history of men’s football.
