April 30, (THEWILL)- The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has suspended the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the institution indefinitely.
A statement signed on Tuesday, by the Institution Registrar, Ademola Bobola, directed all officers of the Students’ Union to hand over all properties of the union in their possession to the Dean, Students’ Affairs, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
It reads: “After due consideration of the report by the management, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the university’s Students Union.
“The suspension, which is indefinite, takes immediate effect, that is, from Monday 29th April, 2024.
“Accordingly, all officers of the Students’ Union are to hand over all properties of the union in their possession to the Dean, Students’ Affairs, no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
“In the interim, a caretaker committee composed of representatives of faculties, schools, and institutes has been approved to coordinate students’ activities during the period of suspension.
“The directive of the Vice Chancellor is hereby communicated for the attention of the university community and compliance of the erstwhile union officers as appropriate,” Bobola said.
THEWILL reports that the suspension of the SUG followed a recent violent incident that rocked the university’s Senior Staff Club on April 12, when Barr. Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association and governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the September 21 gubernatorial election in Edo State, who was a guest at an interactive session organised by the University of Benin Staff Club, was violently interrupted during the event, which caused a crisis within the school premises.
The interactive session abruptly ended after a lecturer in the Department of Economics, Dr. Presley Osemwengie, was allegedly hit in the back of his head with a small axe by students who invaded the occasion.
