March 27, (THEWILL)- Ukraine claimed an emotional 2-1 victory over Iceland, on Tuesday, booking their place at Euro 2024, amid the ongoing war with Russia. Second-half goals from Viktor Tsygankov and Mykhailo Mudryk turned the match around for Serhiy Rebrov’s side after falling behind before half-time.
The vital victory provided a much-needed morale boost for the Ukrainian people, who have endured tremendous hardship since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. Playing their home match in Wroclaw, Poland due to the conflict, Ukraine started brightly before Albert Gudmundsson’s opener put Iceland ahead.
However, Ukraine rallied impressively in the second period. Tsygankov equalised just past the hour mark and Mudryk netted the decisive goal late on to seal qualification and spark wild celebrations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the team’s achievement on social media.
“Thank you for the important victory and making it to EURO. For proving once again: whenever Ukrainians face difficulties but do not give up and continue to fight, Ukrainians certainly win,” Zelenskyy wrote. “Ukraine is, and will be! Thank you for the victory! Glory to Ukraine!”
