UEFA Settles With Liverpool Fans Over 2022 UCL Final Chaos

March 23, (THEWILL) – UEFA has reached a settlement agreement with a group of Liverpool fans represented by law firms, Pogust Goodhead and Bingham Long over the disastrous events preceding the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.

Fans will receive compensation for the difficulties they faced that night, including being penned in, tear-gassed by police, and attacked by locals allowed in the same area.

An independent review in February 2023 found UEFA bore primary responsibility for the chaotic organisation and law enforcement failures that marred the showpiece event won by Real Madrid. Now, 13 months on, European football’s governing body has agreed to pay damages to the Liverpool supporters who brought personal injury claims.

In a statement, UEFA said it had “concluded a full and final settlement” with the fans represented by the two law firms. While the exact terms remain confidential, UEFA stated it was “pleased to have reached a common position which it is hoped provides closure for the fans.” No admission of liability was made.

Michael Burke and Paul Hudson of Pogust Goodhead called it “an exceptionally important case” and said playing a part was “a privilege.” Gerard Long of Bingham Long said the local firm was “delighted” to resolve the matter swiftly and ensure fans receive full compensation without lengthy proceedings.

The settlement draws a line under one of modern football’s most shambolic events off the pitch. However, questions remain over UEFA’s monitoring and event planning capabilities for major finals and are still likely to be more scrutinised in future.
