May 3, (THEWILL)- UEFA, European football’s governing body, made a significant announcement regarding the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. On Friday, the Association revealed an increase in squad sizes from the original limit of 23 players to 26. This decision comes as a response to concerns voiced by international managers about reverting to the pre-COVID-19 squad regulations.
The UEFA Executive Committee’s resolution, grants participating nations the flexibility to field larger squads during the prestigious event. However, it does not impose an obligation on teams to utilise the expanded quota. According to the official statement: “The increase does not represent an obligation for the participating national associations.”
Teams have until June 7 to submit their squad lists to UEFA, adhering to the revised guidelines. While the minimum requirement remains at 23 players, nations now have the option to name up to 26 individuals in their respective squads. This move aims to alleviate potential strain on teams due to injuries or other unforeseen circumstances during the tournament.
The decision to expand squad sizes follows a similar approach taken during the COVID-19 pandemic for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. International managers had expressed concerns about reverting to the pre-pandemic limit of 23 players, citing the need for greater squad depth and rotation to manage the demands of a major tournament.
