September 20, (THEWILL) – Napoli began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Portuguese side,SC Braga, on Wednesday night.
Despite wasting numerous chances, the Italians were able to claim the three points, thanks to goals from Giovanni Di Lorenzo and a late own goal. The match started promisingly for Napoli, as striker, Victor Osimhen, was presented with an early opportunity, but scuffed his shot when one-on-one with the Braga keeper. Osimhen and Di Lorenzo both went close again soon after, but were denied by some brave Braga defending.
As the first-half wore on, the hosts grew into the game and threatened Napoli on the counter-attack, with Abel Ruiz missing a scarce scoring chance. Just before the break the deadlock was finally broken, Di Lorenzo volleying home emphatically from Osimhen’s knock down.
The Italians continued to press after half-time, but were stunned when Braga equalised against the run of play through a Bruma header. However, Napoli showed resilience to quickly restore their lead as a Zielinski cross was turned into his own net by the unlucky Niakate. The home side held on in a dramatic finale despite some late Braga pressure to claim an opening night victory.
The win will relieve some of the pressure on new Napoli boss Rudi Garcia after recent below par domestic results. Attention now turns to their next fixtures as Braga host Boavista in Portugal while Napoli travel to Bologna in Serie A.
