October 04, (THEWILL) – Manchester City needed late goals from substitutes, Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku, to seal a 3-1 away victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
City dominated the first half and deservedly led through Phil Foden’s composed 25th minute finish. However, Leipzig equalised straight after half-time against the run of play when Lois Openda capitalised on a wayward Jack Grealish pass to slot past Ederson.
Pep Guardiola’s side piled on the pressure in search of a winner, with Erling Haaland guilty of wasting several presentable chances. Yet City’s persistence paid off when Alvarez clinically found the bottom corner from the edge of the box with 6 minutes left.
Doku then wrapped up the victory deep into injury time after Leipzig committed bodies forward. Despite the late drama, City were good value for the three points on the balance of play. Midfielder Rico Lewis impressed on his first UCL start, while Rodri’s return from suspension brought calmness to City’s play.
The English Premier League winners made it two wins from two in Europe to top Group G. They are next in action at Arsenal on Sunday in the EPL, but before that Leipzig host VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
