Turkish Referee Attack Is Unacceptable – Infantino

December 12, (THEWILL) – Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, has condemned an attack on referee, Halil Umut Meler, by the president of the Turkish club, Ankaragücü, as ‘Totally Unacceptable’. The incident occurred after Monday’s 1-1 draw with Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Images show Ankaragücü’s president, Faruk Koca, rushing onto the pitch post-match with a group of men and punching Meler. A court has since detained Koca and two others over the attack. In response, Turkey has indefinitely suspended all football leagues.

“There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field,” said Infantino via social media, on Tuesday. “Without match Officials, there is no football. Referees, players, fans and staff, have to be safe and secure to enjoy the game.”

Infantino called on the Turkish authorities to strictly enforce safety at all levels of football. The attack comes amid rising global concern over violence against referees by players, coaches and fans. Experts warn violence threatens referee recruitment and retention, risking the future of grassroots and professional football.

With football’s immense cultural influence, teams and leagues are continually urged to better protect referees and set an example for spectator behaviour. Their jobs remain crucial as careful officiating ensures fair, enjoyable games.
