August 29, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United defender, Kieran Trippier, has announced his retirement from international football after earning 54 caps for England.

The 33-year-old full-back played a crucial role in England’s resurgence at major tournaments over the last six years, solidifying his legacy as one of the nation’s most dependable players.

Trippier’s solitary goal for England came in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, a moment that remains a highlight in his international career. He also contributed to England reaching the finals of the European Championship twice and advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

In a statement posted on social media, Trippier expressed gratitude towards former England manager Gareth Southgate and his teammates. He highlighted the significant milestones achieved during his time with the national team, including two European finals and a World Cup semi-final. Trippier conveyed his confidence in the current squad’s potential to secure a major tournament victory in the future.

Trippier’s decision to retire comes as England prepares to enter a new chapter under interim manager Lee Carsley. Carsley is expected to name his first squad later on Thursday, following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after England’s loss in the Euro 2024 final to Spain last month.

England’s journey in the post-Southgate era will begin with a Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7, followed by a home fixture against Finland at Wembley three days later.
