January 18, (THEWILL) – Striker Ivan Toney has sparked fresh speculation over a potential move to a “top club” after admitting he would be open to leaving Brentford this January. Toney recently returned from an eight-month ban for breaches of England FA betting rules between February 2017 and January 2021.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with the striker amid January reinforcement speculation. However, Brentford’s lofty £80 million asking price tempered interest. Toney initially committed his future to Brentford upon his return from suspension earlier this week in a conversation with former teammate Pontus Jansson.
However, in a new Sky Sports interview, Toney confessed he desires “to play for a top club that is fighting for titles.” He continued, “Whether it’s this January that is the right time for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows?”
Despite the speculation, Toney insists Brentford supporters can expect him to hit the ground running given his training during his suspension. “I believe you will see [the real Ivan Toney] straight away,” he stated, expressing confidence he can “pick up where [he] left off.”
His comments leave the door open for a potential transfer away from Brentford. Toney made it clear he harbours ambitions to join an elite club challenging for honours if the offer and timing are right.
