June 24, (THEWILL) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday, met with Nigerians in Paris after attending the Global Financing Pact Summit in France.
The gathering was facilitated by the Nigerian Mission in France and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
It is his first presidential diaspora engagement since his inauguration on May 29.
Speaking during the interactive engagement, the President gave insight into the reason he suspended Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
President Bola Tinubu had, on Friday, June 9, approved the suspension of Emefiele as Governor of the apex bank.
According to the President, his suspension followed “an ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the Nigerian economy”.
However, during his interactive engagement, the President accused Emefiele of mismanaging the Nigerian Financial system.
According to the President, under Emefiele as CBN Governor, the “financial system was rotten. Few people making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone
“The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that, they will sort themselves out.”
On fuel subsidy removal, the President assured that palliatives to cushion the effects were being worked out.
Answering question on how he convinced Organised Labour to shelve the planned protest over the removal of fuel subsidy, President Bola Tinubu said:
“You want money increase in palliative, transportation, what are you protesting about? Are you sharing part of the subsidy? If you protest, I will join you and protest and they stopped. No protest.
“Palliative we will get but we have to save the money in order to embark on palliatives.”
