Tinubu Lauds Super Eagles’ Resilience Despite AFCON Final Defeat

February 12, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has praised the Super Eagles for their “tenacious performance” in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Ivory Coast. Although the Super Eagles were ultimately defeated by the hosts in the final, Tinubu highlighted the team’s hard work, sacrifice and ability to overcome significant hurdles on their way to the final.

In a statement from the president’s media advisor, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu urged Nigerians not to be discouraged and stated that the Super Eagles had “won a great victory in the hearts of Africa and the world” by displaying grit and determination on the pitch. The president emphasised that he wanted Sunday’s narrow loss in the AFCON final to “bring us together to work harder.”

Tinubu also took the opportunity to encourage aspiring young footballers across Nigeria at a grassroots level. “You can be our heroes tomorrow,” he stated while reaffirming his administration’s pledge to support the realisation of their dreams.

The uplifting statement comes after the Super Eagles were edged 2-1 in the final game of the competition penalties by Ivory Coast. The closely fought final ultimately ended after Sebastien Haller headed in the second Ivorian goal to give the hosts their third continental title. The Super Eagles were seeking a fourth AFCON title to add to their wins in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
