June 07, (THEWILL) – Golf icon Tiger Woods announced on social media on Tuesday that he will not compete in the 2022 U.S. Open, which will be held later this month but expects to compete in the JP McManus Pro-Am and the Open Championship in July in Ireland.

In the message posted on Twitter, Woods wrote: “I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf. I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!”

The three-time winner at the major entered the U.S. Open before the deadline in April, but the PGA Tour said at the time that his entry did not guarantee he would play. He is now confirmed to be absent when the tournament tees off at the Country Club of Brookline from June 16 to 19.

Last month, Woods pulled out of the PGA Championship following the third round. The 15-time major winner has been healing from injuries sustained in a single-car accident in February 2021. Woods suffered open fractures in the upper and lower regions of his right leg, as well as damage to his foot and ankle that necessitated the use of screws and pins.
