August 28, (THEWILL) — Buildings were set ablaze during the ensuing violence. Police and military authorities deployed multiple tactical formations to the area.
At least three persons have been killed and two others injured following a violent clash triggered by a dispute over a ₦200 payment in the Ikola area of Ipaja, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, threw the community into panic as violence spread through parts of the area, with some buildings set ablaze.
Videos circulating online showed scenes of unrest, including what appeared to be lifeless bodies on the streets, although the Lagos State Police Command officially confirmed three deaths.
The Command also confirmed that two persons sustained injuries during the clash.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said preliminary information indicated that the violence started after suspected area boys allegedly stopped a tricycle operator and demanded ₦200 from him.
According to her, the rider refused to make the payment, prompting the group to seize his tricycle. She said the rider later returned with some persons, leading to a confrontation between the two groups.
The confrontation subsequently escalated into violent clashes, resulting in the deaths and injuries recorded.
“Three persons were killed, while two others sustained injuries during the clash”, Adebisi said, adding that some buildings were also set ablaze during the violence.
The deceased and injured persons were taken to the Military Hospital, Yaba, for medical attention and other necessary procedures.

As the violence escalated, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, visited the scene alongside the Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Afolabi Owolabi.
The visit was aimed at assessing the situation and coordinating the security response to prevent further escalation.
Following the deployment, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Taskforce, Tactical Squad and Police Mobile Force were sent to the area. Personnel of the Eko Strike Force and the Violent Crime Response Unit were also deployed to reinforce security operations.
Adebisi said the security personnel had succeeded in restoring calm and were maintaining law and order in the affected community. She assured residents that the Command would not allow the incident to degenerate further, adding that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the clash had commenced.
“The command has begun an investigation into the incident and will ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law”, she stated.
The police spokesperson urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of reigniting the violence. She also warned against the circulation of unverified information, particularly on social media, stressing that such reports could heighten tension and further complicate the security situation.
Adebisi appealed to residents and other members of the public with credible information about the incident to make it available to the police to assist investigators.
