October 22, (THEWILL) – Tesla generated $1.53 billion in free cash flow in the third quarter, outperforming expectations for a cash outflow even as profit fell sharply.
Revenue came in at $28.05 billion, broadly unchanged from a year earlier, while GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders dropped 43% to $787 million.
The quarter therefore showed stronger-than-expected cash generation without an improvement in profitability.
Capital Spending Came In Below Expectations
Tesla generated $6.26 billion in operating cash flow and spent $4.73 billion on capital expenditure.
Analysts had expected significantly higher investment spending, which had contributed to forecasts for negative free cash flow.
Actual capital expenditure was still 110% higher than a year earlier, reflecting continued spending on AI, robotics, factories and energy infrastructure.
Tesla ended the quarter with $45.45 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments.

Profit Fell Despite Better Margins
Tesla’s overall gross margin improved to 19.6% from 18%, while automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits also came in above expectations.
However, operating expenses rose 39% to $4.78 billion, including higher research and development spending.
Automotive revenue declined 3% to $20.56 billion, while vehicle deliveries fell about 2% year on year to 486,532.
Those higher costs helped pull operating income down 56% and net profit down 43%.

Battery Deployments Rose While Revenue Fell
Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of battery storage, up 10% from a year earlier.
However, energy generation and storage revenue fell 16% to $2.88 billion.
Tesla said tariff-related customer refunds contributed to the decline, showing why higher installation volumes do not automatically translate into higher revenue.
Pricing, product mix and revenue timing can also affect the result.
Tesla Is Still Expanding Storage Capacity
Tesla says production has started at Megafactory Texas, with planned annual capacity of 50 GWh.
The company also reported strong storage orders and said rising electricity demand from data centres is supporting demand for Megapack systems.
Those developments point to continued expansion in Tesla’s energy business, but they do not establish that batteries are becoming cheaper or more accessible for African buyers.
Tesla disclosed no Nigeria- or Africa-specific pricing or distribution changes in the quarter.
What Investors Should Take From The Quarter
Tesla’s results show a company preserving more cash than expected while profitability remains under pressure.
Free cash flow was positive at $1.53 billion, but it was still 62% lower than a year earlier, while net profit, operating income and automotive revenue all declined.
For investors, the stronger signal is not that Tesla’s earnings suddenly improved.
It is that the company managed its cash better than expected while continuing to spend heavily on its next phase of growth.
