Terror: Police Defuse Bomb At Mosque In Kano, Five Killed In Catholic Church Attack

The Kano State Police Command Sunday said the bomb unit of the department on Saturday night defused IEDs loaded inside a vehicle left at the gate of a popular mosque in Goron Dutse Quarters, Kano.

At a press conference addressed by the Kano State police chief, Mr. Adenrele Shinaba, said “On Saturday, the 26th July which is an eve to this year’s Eid Fitr celebration by Muslims all over the world, the Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the general Public that at about 10:40pm a distress call was received from the members of the community that a Peugeot 406 white in colour with reg. No AA 513 ZAK was discovered abandoned at the gate of Isiayaku Rabiu Mosque located at Goron Dutse Qtrs Kano.

“On receipt of the information, our men led by the EOD Personnel were mobilized to the scene and discovered the said vehicle was loaded with IEDs primed to be detonated during today’s Eid Fitr’s Prayers. We immediately disconnected and dislodged the EIDs safely without causing any injury or damage.”

Meanwhile, at least five persons were killed on Sunday afternoon at St. Charles Catholic Church located along Zungeru Road, Sabon Gari, Kano, when IEDs were thrown into the church after Sunday’s service by terrorists.

The dead according to the Kano State police chief included a soldier, two women, a male and a toddler. Eight churchgoers were also wounded during the incident.

The police chief also said a 15 years old female suicide bomber blew herself up at a search post. Five policemen were wounded during the incident.

In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force has detained five (5) males over their alleged complicity in the terrorist attacks in Kano.

Announcing the development in a press statement, police force spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said their detention is part of on-going investigations into the various terror related incidents that occurred in Kano.

“Two were arrested in connection with the foiled bomb attack at Isyaku Rabiu Mosque, while three were arrested in connection with the attack at St Charles Church. All suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.

“Intensive patrols are ongoing, citizens are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activities to security forces,” he wrote.
