March 20, (THEWILL)- Nigerian track and field stars put on a scintillating display on Tuesday at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Tobi Amusan led the way with a dominant 13.03-second performance in her 100m hurdles heat, slowing down before the finish line. She and Faith Osamuyi (13.55s) qualified for the final.
Quarter-miler Esther Elo Joseph continued her blistering form, setting a new personal best of 51.75s to win the first 400m semi-final. In the men’s 400m, Chidi Okezie (45.63s) and Dubem Nwachukwu (45.89s) booked their spots in the final with impressive season’s best and second-placed finishes respectively.
Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga emerged as the fastest 400m qualifier with a 45.51s clocking. The Nigerian men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams also cruised into the final after catching the eye in their semi-final races on the day.
Nigeria’s athletics team is hoping to match or surpass the 10 gold medals won at the last African Games in Rabat in 2019. With such strong performances already, they look well on course to achieve that target in Ghana.
