May 26, (THEWILL)- Egyptian giants Al Ahly claimed an unprecedented 12th CAF Champions League triumph, defeating Esperance of Tunisia 1-0 in Saturday’s final second leg in Cairo. Midfielder Akram Tawfiq was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
The decisive moment came just four minutes into the clash when Esperance’s Roger Aholo inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Al Ahly’s relentless attack. Despite numerous chances for both sides, the solitary goal proved enough for the Red Devils to lift the trophy for the second consecutive season.
In a classy gesture following the final whistle, the triumphant Al Ahly players formed a guard of honour to applaud the Esperance runners-up as they collected their medals. Tawfiq dedicated the victory to the club’s fans and board, hailing the team’s determination and effort throughout the campaign.
The victory in front of over 70,000 home supporters at the Cairo International Stadium extended Al Ahly’s remarkable record as the most successful side in the competition’s history. Their 12 Champions League triumphs are unmatched by any other club on the continent.
