Taraba Crisis: Osinbajo Summons Security Chiefs, Deploys More Troops

BEVERLY HILLS, June 22, (THEWILL) – The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has summoned security chiefs over the recent violence that left many people dead in several communities in Taraba State. He also held a meeting with the state Governor Darius Ishaku.

THEWILL had reported that the communities in Sardauna local government area of Taraba state as urging Osinbajo to declare a state of emergency in Taraba state because without such measure, the “protection of our remaining people” cannot be guaranteed.

Their call followed the killing of 100 people and the rustling of 15,000 cattle in clashes that happened in the North-East state, which had in the past witnessed ethnic and religious crises.

The Acting President, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, ordered the service chiefs to deploy an extra military battalion, police reinforcements and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to the affected areas.

While commiserating with the government and people of Taraba state over their losses, he assured them that the perpetrators of the violent acts would be brought to book.

“The Acting President has ordered the provision of relief materials to be delivered to the affected communities in Toffi, Mayo Daga, Mayo Sina, Tamiya, Kwara-Kwara, Tungan Lugere, Timjire, Nguroje and other villages in the hinterlands of Mambilla Plateau,” he said, adding that: “The Federal Government has also put in motion long time solutions, including mediation between opposing groups in the communal conflict.”
