The maltreatment of pensioners in Nigeria got to an abysmal level last week when policemen in Lagos tear-gassed senior citizens protesting unpaid pension increases, wage awards and other outstanding benefits.

The protesters, comprising members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, had gathered at the government premises to press the state authorities to act on their demands.
