In a statement to PEOPLE, Parton’s representatives said the singer died on August 25 at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by loved ones. They did not disclose the type of cancer she had been battling.
Her family announced her death Tuesday, with her nephew Bryan Seaver sharing the news in a video on social media.
Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, said she had asked him years ago to make the announcement.
