September 25, (THEWILL) – Spain endured a shocking 2-1 home loss to Switzerland in Group A2 on Saturday, leaving them needing to win in Portugal if they want to advance to the Nations League Finals.
Luis Enrique’s team failed to capitalise on their superiority in Zaragoza and suffered their first loss since the 2021 Nations League final loss to France, while Portugal easily defeated the Czech Republic 4-0 in the other group encounter.
At no stage in the first half did it appear as though Spain would be able to offset Manuel Akanji’s opening goal, because of their problems turning possession, which they enjoyed for several spells, into a goal threat.

Jordi Alba’s equaliser in the first minute of the second half was inspired by Marco Asensio, but an own goal by Eric Garcia almost immediately put them back in the losing side, with a second equaliser never materialising for the hosts.
On September 27, Spain will play the league’s top team, Portugal, away from home, while Switzerland will play the Czech Republic.
