August 31, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek has turned down the chance to play mixed doubles with Andy Murray, at the US Open, in order to keep her full focus on defending the women’s singles title.

The 22-year-old Polish star was mentioned by Murray as a potential partner in a video message, but she feels concentrating solely on singles is the best approach.

“I love that he said that. It’s a dream come true. I watched Andy when I was younger. He always had such a good game and is such a cool person as well. Really humble and down to earth,” said Swiatek, who has reached the third round in New York. “I wish I could play mixed doubles. For me, singles is enough, especially with such an intense season.”

Both players have impressed early on at Flushing Meadows. Swiatek earned straight-sets wins over Rebecca Peterson and Daria Saville while Murray defeated Corentin Moutet prior to facing Grigor Dimitrov.

Last year, Swiatek claimed her maiden US Open and fourth career Grand Slam title after defeating Ons Jabeur in the final. She will now play Kaja Juvan as she bids for a second major triumph of 2022.
