SuperSport To Miss Out On AFCON 2024 Libs Broadcast In Major Blow

January 03, (THEWILL) – MultiChoice has announced that its SuperSport channel will not be broadcasting the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament, scheduled to be held from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday, MultiChoice said “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th to February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.”

With the tournament due to kick off shortly, the news will come as a major disappointment to football fans across Africa, who were hoping to watch AFCON 2024 on the popular SuperSport channel.

MultiChoice explained further “AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.” So whilst the games will still be accessible, fans will have to switch to FTA stations rather than watching in their usual place on SuperSport.

The development raises questions around why one of the biggest broadcasters in Africa was unable to obtain the rights to air what is the continent’s largest football competition. The 2024 edition is set to feature some of the top African talent on show.
