SAN FRANCISCO, November 29, (THEWILL) – Uruguayan veteran striker Edinson Cavani came on as a substitute to inspire a superb turnaround as Manchester United came from two behind to beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints centre back Jan Bednarek’s header and a trademark free-kick from central midfielder captain James Ward-Prowse had given Southampton the lead and put the hosts in command of the fixture.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s introduction of Cavani in the second half proved a masterstroke. Initial dividends came in the 59th minute when he teed up midfielder Bruno Fernandes to halve the deficit.

Then, he showed depth of experience when he met a deflected Fernandes shot with a diving header to level the scores in the 74th minute.

Cavani still had the crucial final say as he diverted Marcus Rashford’s peachy cross beyond Saints’ keeper Alex McCarthy in the 92nd minute. In so doing, he helped Man U secure a record eighth successive Premier League away win which moves them up to seventh on the table with 16 points.

Southampton remain fifth on 17 points.
