Super Falcons Beat Lady Elephants 2-0 In AWCON Qualifier In Abuja

February 19, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Super Falcons defeated Cote d’Ivoire’s Lady Elephants in a 2022 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualification match on Friday.

In an exciting match at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the Super Falcons defeated the Lady Elephants two goals to nil.

The Nigerian ladies first scored against their Ivorian counterparts in the 13th minute of play, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul call by the centre referee, who instead awarded the Super Falcons a free kick.

However, in the 21st minute of play, Esther Okoronkwo set up Ifeoma Onumonu inside the box for a close-range goal that put the Super Falcons ahead.

In the 56th minute of the second half, Onumonu scored her brace by lobbing the ball over the onrushing Ivorian goalie to increase the Super Falcons’ lead. The ladies from Cote d’Ivoire did well, but they were unable to find the net against their more experienced opponents.

In the match, Ashleigh Plumptre, a former England young international, made her international debut for Nigeria.
