November 20, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has refused to deny reports linking him with the coaching position at Zamalek. The Egyptian club recently dismissed Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio after a string of poor results. Local media reports suggest that Peseiro is in talks with Zamalek over becoming their new manager.
Zamalek Spokesman, Ahmed Salem, has dismissed speculation that an agreement has been reached. However, Peseiro is reported to have applied for the job and submitted his resume to the board. The 63-year-old previously managed African giants Al Ahly briefly during the 2015/2016 calendar and is familiar with Egyptian football.
Peseiro’s future as Super Eagles coach is uncertain after two disappointing draws to start World Cup qualifying. When asked about the Zamalek links he said “This is not the appropriate time to talk about all these matters.” He refused further comment on the speculation.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed in September that Peseiro agreed to continue as Super Eagles coach after accepting a pay cut. He has been tasked with reaching at least the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Peseiro took over as Super Eagles boss in May 2022. But the team’s slow start to World Cup qualifying has put his job under threat. A move to Zamalek could offer an escape route if he decides his future lies away from the Nigerian national team.
