May 4, (THEWILL)- VfB Stuttgart claimed a remarkable 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich at the MHP Arena on Saturday, to make Thomas Tuchel’s final days at the Allianz even tougher. The triumph keeps alive Stuttgart’s hopes of finishing second in the league table, ahead of the ousted champions.
Stuttgart got off to a dream start when Leonidas Stergiou broke the deadlock midway through the first half, dinking a first-time finish over Manuel Neuer. However, Bayern equalised after a contentious penalty decision, with Harry Kane coolly converting from the spot to score his 36th league goal of the season.
Despite Kane’s influence, the visitors squandered golden opportunities to take the lead in the second half. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting dragged his effort wide after being played through by the Englishman, while Deniz Undav’s drilled shot was saved by Neuer.
Stuttgart’s perseverance paid off as late goals from substitutes Jeong Woo-yeong and Silas secured a memorable 3-1 victory. Jeong arrived late at the back post to convert Silas’ cross in the 83rd minute, before the Brazilian capped off the win deep into added time.
The triumph means Sebastian Hoeness’ men have now lost just one of their previous 20 home matches, while Bayern will have to regroup ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
