Stage Set For Sinner, Medvedev For Rematch At Miami Masters

March 28, (THEWILL) – Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev will renew their rivalry in the semi-finals of the Miami Open after scoring impressive victories in the last eight on Wednesday. The duo contested the Australian Open final earlier this year, with Sinner rallying from two sets down to claim his first Grand Slam title. Their Miami showdown will also be a repeat of last year’s championship match.

The 22-year-old Italian dispatched Czech opponent Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2 in an efficient 91-minute performance. Sinner grabbed an early break but faced a swift response from Machac before taking control of the opening set. The second set was more straightforward for the world number three as he broke early and never looked back.

Sinner praised Machac’s talent and physicality after the match, stating: “He has incredible talent. He is super fast, also physically he is in great shape. I didn’t know exactly what to expect today. The first game I was looking a little bit at what kind of tactics could work or not.”

Medvedev had a more challenging path to the semis, dropping the second set against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry before prevailing 6-2 7-6(7). The Russian cruised through the first set, but Jarry found his rhythm in the second, feeding off the energy of the heavily Latin American crowd. The duo traded blows in an entertaining second set before Medvedev escaped in the tiebreak.

The defending champion acknowledged the raucous atmosphere, saying: “It was a pretty good atmosphere, you know even many times the referee was saying like players are ready, but I was like I don’t care, it’s not too bad, I’ve seen worse.” He is eager for another battle with Sinner, quipping: “I won the first two sets, which would be enough in Miami. But for sure this match is going to be different.”
