Sports Minister Seeks Answers From NFF After World Cup Qualifiers Flop

June 11, (THEWILL)- Nigerian Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has called for a comprehensive technical report from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the Super Eagles’ underwhelming results in their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles managed just one point from a possible six in June’s international window, drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo before losing 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan. These results leave Nigeria with a disappointing three points from four games in their bid to qualify for the 2026 tournament hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Enoh expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance despite substantial government backing for the NFF under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “The recent results are unacceptable,” the Minister stated, citing the profound disappointment caused to Nigerian football fans.

He insisted the NFF must justify why consequences should not follow such below-par showings on the international stage. “Our supporters are passionate and devoted. They deserve an explanation for why our national team has not been performing to expected standards since the last AFCON,” Enoh added.

The Minister’s demands for accountability reflect growing frustration with the Super Eagles’ struggles to live up to their usual pedigree in World Cup qualifying after a second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 2023.
