January 08, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, led his pet basketball team, the Ogbomosho Rockets, to victory over the LAUTECH Thunders on Saturday.
In the debut match at the newly reconstructed basketball court at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), the Rockets won 45-35 in the warm-up game, which featured former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji, playing for the Thunders.
Following the match, Dare praised the talents of the players, expressing his belief that some of them would be good enough to play for the national team, saying: “I am happy that I am able to give back to the community, especially the youth in the University campus, the largest concentration of youth in this country are in the campuses.
“And, you can see the talents. Investment in youth is directly an investment in sports development. I am sure one or two of them will make it to the national team. We have seen the flashes. We have seen Olumide Oyedeji, who is a former NBA player and D’Tigers captain. He is also happy seeing some talents here.”
The newly reconstructed court and stands for supporters will now allow the LAUTECH Thunders to train and become more competitive. In February, a six-team tournament featuring teams from Kwara, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, and Ogun States will be held at the court.
