Soyuncu To Leave Leicester For Atletico On Free Transfer

February 28, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement with Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu for a free transfer to the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium this coming summer.

Soyuncu’s contract with Leicester City will expire at the end of the season, and talks regarding a new deal have been unfruitful. In the January transfer window, Atletico had expressed interest in Soyuncu on a Bosman deal, and it appears that the player is now set to sign a pre-contract agreement with the club ahead of a summer move.

Although several English clubs, including Liverpool and Newcastle United, were interested in Soyuncu, talks apparently did not advance, and the Turkey international is set to head to Spain instead. Soyuncu also received offers from clubs in Italy and Germany that he did not favour either.

THEWILL recalls that Soyuncu joined Leicester from Freiburg in 2018, and he made a name for himself in the 2019/2020 season, when he was voted into the PFA Team of the Year. He was also part of the Leicester side that won their first ever FA Cup one year later.

However, the centre-back has fallen out of favour with manager Brendan Rodgers this season, making just four appearances in all competitions as the Foxes manager has shown preference for James Maddison, Tete and Dennis Praet.
