May 22, (THEWILL) – Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo-led Anambra State government, on Sunday morning, halted the planned closure of Anambra International Airport, due to workers unrest.

Earlier, Air Traffic Controllers and other essential service providers at the airport had planned to down tools following the ejection of the workers from their hotels.

President, National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA). Abayomi Agoro, who confirmed the development, however, informed, that the state government had reached an agreement with the workers to continue to provide accommodation for them in the discharge of their duties.

A radio message earlier sent by the controllers, which was made available to THEWILL Sunday morning read, “any station/DATCO sending flight to Anambra Airport today should first confirm whether the TWR is operational.

“The reason is that all Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) staff working at the airport were suddenly vacated from their accommodation yesterday without prior information.

“Even those on duty are being asked to pay for their accommodation for last night.

“At the time of filing this report, the NAMA staffs were all in the hotel packing their belongings to leave.”

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had in December last year granted the Anambra State Cargo Airport the right to operate light aircraft.

Anambra International Cargo Airport is an international airport situated at Ivite-Umueri in Umuleri, Anambra State.

It began its operation in December 7, 2021, after being approved by NCAA.
