Provisional government data show that 14,819 migrants have crossed the English Channel aboard small boats so far in 2026. That figure represents a 43 per cent decline compared with the same period last year and is also 16 per cent lower than the number recorded during the corresponding period in 2024.
Authorities further noted that July recorded the lowest monthly total of small-boat arrivals since 2020, arguing that tougher enforcement measures and enhanced cooperation with France were beginning to reduce the overall number of crossings.
Nevertheless, officials warned that criminal syndicates were adapting to increased border controls by placing ever larger numbers of migrants aboard fewer vessels.
Farage Renews Border Security Attack
The latest crossing immediately reignited political tensions over Britain’s immigration policy.
Leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, seized on the incident to criticise the government’s handling of border security.
In a post on X, Farage revealed that the vessel carrying 230 migrants arrived in Dover at about 2:30 a.m., describing it as the largest single-boat crossing ever recorded.
