October 09, (THEWILL) – Spanish club, Sevilla, have taken the decision to dismiss manager, Jose Luis Mendilibar, following their 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Saturday.

The result leaves the UEFA Europa League holders down in 14th place in the table with just two wins, two draws and four defeats from their opening eight matches. Mendilibar was appointed as manager back in March but has now become the third boss to be relieved of his duties by the club inside the last 12 months.

The experienced 62-year-old did manage to steer Sevilla away from relegation trouble last season, securing a 12th placed finish. He also led the club to Europa League success in May, beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma on penalties to claim their seventh title. However, Sevilla’s poor start to the new campaign has prompted the board to take action ahead of their upcoming fixtures.

After the international break, they face a tricky trip to Real Madrid before hosting Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

Mendilibar departs with Sevilla having picked up just eight points from their first eight league matches. His successor will be tasked with turning around their fortunes and helping the club rediscover their best form.
