October 09, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory away at Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday, just days after their UEFA Champions League thrashing by Newcastle United.
First half goals from Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi put the visitors in control at Roazhon Park. Amine Gouiri pulled one back for Rennes in the 57th minute but substitute Randal Kolo Muani swiftly restored PSG’s two-goal lead.
The French champions were dominant from the off, with Kylian Mbappe going close early on. The breakthrough came when Vitinha produced a stunning dipping strike from the edge of the box to beat Steve Mandanda. Hakimi then headed home at the back post just four minutes later to double PSG’s advantage.
Despite being second best for most of the match, Rennes managed to reduce the deficit through Gouiri’s header 11 minutes after the restart. However, a defensive lapse allowed Hakimi to race through and set up Kolo Muani for 3-1 two minutes later.
Mbappe had a golden chance to extend the lead late on but somehow blazed over from close range with the goal at his mercy. In the end though, PSG were comfortable winners to claim an important three points and shake off their midweek European humbling at St James’ Park.
