January 23, (THEWILL) – Senegal secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a commanding 3-0 victory over DR Congo on Sunday.
In the final Group B match played at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, the Teranga Lions triumphed over the two-time winners, earning themselves a place in the knockout stage of the ongoing tournament in Algeria.
In their quest to redeem themselves from a previous loss to Uganda, Senegal came out strong and after a couple of missed opportunities, found the back of the net in the 23rd minute with a tap-in goal from Ousmane Diouf. The game took a turn for the worse for DR Congo when Kevin Mondeko, was sent off for bringing down Cheikh Diouf, on a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
In the second half, DR Congo tried to come back but Jean Mundele’s free kick went inches over the bar, meanwhile, Senegal took advantage of their opponent’s relentless attack and scored two more goals in the 74th and 78th minutes respectively.
The match concluded with a convincing 3-0 victory for the Teranga Lions, who now advance to the quarterfinals where they will face the winner of Group D.
