Senate Confirms 15 RECs, Says 12 Others Undergoing Screening

SAN FRANCISCO, June 01, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nomination of 15 of the 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners, REC, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

THEWILL recalls that Buhari had on March 23 sent 27 REC nominees to the upper legislative chamber for confirmation in compliance with section 14(3)(a) of the third schedule to the 1999 constitution as amended.

Their confirmation by the upper chamber followed the adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on INEC at the plenary on Thursday.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Suleiman Nazif, while presenting the report, said all the nominees were cleared by the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, DSS, and the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.

He disclosed that the remaining 12 nominees were still undergoing screening and would be brought forward for confirmation once the committee is through with its screening.

The 15 confirmed nominees include:

  • Ahmed Makama, Bauchi (reappointment)
  • James Apam, Benue (new appointment)
  • Nwachukwu Orji, Ebonyi (new appointment)
  • Iloh Chuks, Enugu (new appointment)
  • Nentawe Yilwada, Plateau (new appointment)
  • Umar Ibrahim, Taraba (new appointment)
  • Emeka Joseph, Imo (new appointment)
  • Obo Effanga, Cross River (new appointment)
  • Francis Ezeonu, Anambra (new appointment)
  • Briyai Frankland, Bayelsa (new appointment)
  • Ibrahim Abdullahi, Adamawa (new appointment)
  • Agboke Olaleke, Ogun (new appointment)
  • Hussaini Pai, FCT (reappointment)
  • Sadiq Musa, Kaduna (reappointment)
