BEVERLY HILLS, March 15, (THEWILL) – The Senate on Wednesday began the hearing to confirm the nomination of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the Substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Acting Chairman, whose screening had been turned down by the Upper Legislative Chamber, said the screening was a watershed in his life as a law enforcement officer.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Hameed Ali, on Wednesday, failed to honour the invitation of the senate.

Ali’s hearing was the first on the order paper of the senate for Wednesday but he failed to show up.

This led the Senate to direct him to appear before it on Thursday to explain why he has refused to honour the invitation of the upper chambers to come and explain the policy on duty on vehicles and other recent acts of the Customs.

The decision of the Senate followed a motion by Senator George Sekibo, PDP, Rivers East who relied on Section 88of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and seconded by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

The Senate ordered the NCS boss to appear before it at plenary tomorrow at 10am, threatening that if he fails to appear, it would be forced to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Stressing that government is not about making money, but about the welfare of the people, the Upper Chamber vowed to move against anyone or institution that tries to rubbish the Upper chambers as an institution.
