December 20, (THEWILL) – Bayer Leverkusen will go into the Bundesliga winter break at the top of the table, after a dominating 4-0 home victory over VfL Bochum on Wednesday night. Hours after picking up his fifth Rookie of the Month award, Victor Boniface, came off the bench to score the fourth goal in the 69th minute and round out a confident team performance.
However, Patrik Schick was the star of the show, netting a first-half hat-trick, to secure the three points. The match started slowly for Leverkusen, but they suddenly clicked into gear around the half-hour mark. Schick netted a penalty to open the scoring, before doubling the lead just two minutes later courtesy of a Jeremie Frimpong cross.
The 27-year-old Czech international, completed his treble right on half time, heading in an Alejandro Grimaldo corner. Leverkusen continued to control proceedings in the second period and did enough to secure all three points.
The win leaves Leverkusen on 42 points after 16 matches, four clear at the top of Bayern Munich, who have a game in hand. VfL Bochum currently sit third on 34 points.
The Bundesliga now goes on a lengthy winter break, resuming on January 12, 2024. Leverkusen hopes to pick up where they left off as they seek to claim their first German title since 1993.
