October 30, (THEWILL) – Atalanta secured a comfortable 3-0 victory at home against Empoli on Monday, thanks to a brace from Gianluca Scamacca. The Italian striker netted twice and assisted another in a dominant display that saw Atalanta leapfrog reigning champions Napoli, in the Serie A table.
Both sides were missing key players, but Atalanta quickly took control of the match. Scamacca opened the scoring in the 5th minute assisted by Ademola Lookman’s throughball. Scamacca almost added another soon after, but saw his shot rattle the post. Although he did have a goal disallowed for offside, Scamacca got his second with a fierce low drive in the second half to round off the scoring.
In between Scamacca’s goals, Teun Koopmeiners extended Atalanta’s lead with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box in the 30th minute. Scamacca was the provider for the Dutch midfielder, capping off a slick passing move.
The margin of victory could have been greater for La Dea as Scamacca twice hit the frame of the goal and also saw a close-range effort saved. Empoli rarely threatened, with goalkeeper Juan Musso only forced into one significant stop.
The emphatic win cements Atalanta’s status as one of Serie A’s in-form teams and Scamacca’s display caught the eye of Italy coach Luciano Spalletti, who was in attendance. La Dea will look to build on this result when they face League leaders Inter Milan next weekend.
