If the statement credited to Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, is anything to go by, then there is a likelihood that the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, may be restored to the throne.
Kwankwaso had revealed that one of the things the Governor-elect of Kano State, Yusuf Abba, who happens to be his son in-law, would do as a matter of urgency is to investigate Sanusi’s dethronement and see if it was justified. In so doing, there may also be a reversal of the decision that split the Kano Emirate into five separate emirates.
Although the outgoing governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, responded to Kwankwaso’s statement by reiterating that the new emirates created by his administration were here to stay, to honour the people of the region and to salvage the reputation of the traditional institutions, he obviously forgot that just as he wielded power to make and unmake, so will the incoming governor also wield the same authority and at his own discretion. As soon as his (Ganduje) time as governor ends on May 29, he will lose the cloak of immunity and cease to do as he wishes.
The outspoken former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was dethroned as the 14th Emir of Kano on March 9, 2020, banished from Kano and sent to Loko, a remote community in Nasarawa State, while the expenses of the emirate under him were probed. Ganduje then proceeded to split the Kano emirates into five.
The creation of the new emirates has been a controversial issue in Kano since 2020, with some people supporting the move and others opposing it. But Sanusi has maintained a dignified silence on the issue with many still according him all the respect of an Emir.
