September 17, (THEWILL) – Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz clinched a dramatic Singapore Grand Prix victory on Sunday, fending off a trio of British drivers in a frantic finish.
Sainz’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, surged past George Russell at the start as the Mercedes driver ran wide, losing further ground to Lewis Hamilton. Although Hamilton later relinquished the place back to Russell, Sainz remained comfortably ahead until a safety car on lap 20 allowed Russell to take the lead when Sainz pitted.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, winner of the previous 10 races, could only manage fifth after a failed strategy left him mired in traffic. A virtual safety car enabled the Mercedes drivers to take fresh tyres for a late charge, with Russell breezing past Leclerc and Hamilton following soon after.
In a nail-biting finale, a battle between the Mercedes pair and Lando Norris allowed Sainz to hang on for his second career victory with Norris following close behind. Russell slammed the wall as his tyres faded, allowing Hamilton to snatch third.
