October 12, (THEWILL) -Wayne Rooney has admitted to being excited about the challenge of managing Birmingham City Football Club, who have their sights set on promotion to the English Premier League.
The ex-England captain was appointed Blues boss on a three-and-a-half-year contract last Wednesday after leaving DC United, as THEWILL reported. This came just two days after Birmingham sacked previous manager, John Eustace, while the club was sixth in the Championship table.
Rooney returns to football management on English soil, having previously led Derby County from 2020-2022. He told a Thursday press conference that getting back into the English game and Birmingham’s ambitions made it an easy decision. Rooney stated the goal is getting the club back to the EPL through hard work across the club. He is committed and ready to push for promotion this season.
When asked about taking over a successful club, Rooney said he loves the pressure and has dealt with it since breaking through at age 16. He is not unaware of the need to ready the players, some of whom are unfamiliar with such pressure.
Rooney had already started working early that morning and revealed he spoke with new minority owner, Tom Brady, saying the American football star is ambitious to move the club forward.
