November 09, (THEWILL) – Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies topped Group B after defeating Rivers Angels 1-0 on matchday two at El Salam Stadium in Cairo in the ongoing Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League.
The South Africans increased their lead in the group to six points, three more than Kenya’s Vihiga Queens and Morocco’s ASFAR. The Rivers Angels of Nigeria trail all three others in the group still without a point.
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Zanele Portia Nhlapho scored the game’s lone goal in the 17th minute, giving Massandawna their second consecutive 1-0 victory of the competition.
Nigeria’s representatives in the continental competition attempted to get back into the game but were unable to convert their chances into goals, leaving them on the verge of not making it out of the group stages of the maiden competition.
Edwin Okon, the Rivers Angels Coach, was broken by their fate. He admitted that much when he said: “It was a good game, but not from our side. We created many chances but did not score. But the goal we conceded is what makes me unhappy. This defeat breaks my heart as a coach”.
In the other Group B match, Kenya’s Vihiga Queens resurrected their hopes of reaching the semifinals by defeating Morocco’s ASFAR to further complicate the group standings.
The Kenyans dominated the first half, with Violet Wanyonyi scoring the first goal for the Queens in the ninth minute.
Tereza Engesha scored the game’s second goal after the break, as ASFAR attempted to reclaim the lead but lacked the finishing touch.
On Friday, Vihiga Queens will meet Rivers Angels at the 30 June Stadium, while ASFAR will face Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies at the El Salam Stadium.
