Rivers Angel Face “Mission Impossible” For A Shot At Semifinal

November 11, (THEWILL) – As Group B of the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League enters its last day, Nigeria’s Rivers Angels meet Kenya’s Vihiga Queens at 30 June Stadium, hoping to bounce back from back-to-back defeats.

Vihiga Queens need a win to advance to the semifinals, while Rivers Angels have the slimmest of chances to advance based on the outcome of the other group fixture between Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR.

The Nigerian ladies arrived in Cairo with great expectations of extending the country’s continental dominance to club tournaments. However, they were brought down to earth after losing two games in a row, first a 3-0 loss to ASFAR and 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The results have left Rivers Angels as the only side without a single point and still goalless in Group B after matchday two.

The ladies will need to win their final group game to keep their fragile qualifying hopes alive.

Rivers Angel coach Edwin Okon felt broken after the second defeat. He admitted this much when he said post-match: “The defeats broke my heart. We did not come here for that, but we will play with all what we got in the last game.”

Their opponents on matchday three, Vihiga Queens, are no pushovers. After losing their first game to Mamelodi Sundowns, the Kenyans stunned their Moroccan foes ASFAR 2-0 to resurrect their qualification ambitions and give themselves a chance to qualify through victory over Rivers Angels.

Tereza Engesha’s exploits led Vihiga Queens to a surprising win in matchday two, and she will need another strong showing if the “Queens of the East” are to qualify for the semifinals.

Charles Okere, the Vihiga Queens coach said: “Our next match is very important for us to win as we want to be in the semi-final.”
