October 12, (THEWILL) – Declan Rice has won Arsenal’s September Goal of the Month award for his dramatic late winner against Manchester United, the club announced on Thursday. The summer signing scored in the 96th minute to secure a vital 3-1 victory for the Gunners.
Rice’s strike was chosen ahead of five other nominated goals, including one from talented youngster Ethan Nwaneri. The starlet was recognised for his brilliant effort against Reading in a Premier League 2 match, but it was not enough to claim the fan-voted prize.
The winner came late in the game when Rice swivelled and struck a right-footed effort that clipped Jonny Evans and deceived goalkeeper Andre Onana. It was the former West Ham captain’s first goal since joining Arsenal in the summer.
Alessia Russo came second in the vote after scoring an impressive individual goal that garnered 31% of the total. Other nominees included Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.
Despite missing out this month, 15-year-old Nwaneri has seen his fair share of recognition over the past year. He was nominated for Arsenal’s Goal of the Month in November and December 2022, as well as February, April, August and now September 2023.
