January 04, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have confirmed that Spanish defender, Sergio Reguilon, has returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur. The 27-year-old initially joined United on a season-long loan deal in September 2023 to provide cover whilst Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia recovered from injuries.
Over the course of his loan spell, Reguilon made 12 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United. However, with Shaw and Malacia now nearing returns to full fitness, Manchester United have taken up a break clause in Reguilon’s loan contract.
A club statement read: “Sergio fulfilled the role he was brought in for: to provide cover while both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were out with long-term injuries. While Luke has missed the past two games with a minor injury, the England international is expected back soon.”
Reguilon is now heading back to Tottenham, where he still has over 3 years remaining on his current contract. The left-back joined Spurs from Real Madrid in 2020 for £27 million and made 52 English Premier League appearances over his first two seasons with the London club.
In the 2022/2023 campaign, Reguilon was also out on loan with La Liga side Atletico Madrid. He will now compete for a starting berth once again under Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. Hopefully, he will not be off on another loan so soon.
